How to apply for an Indian E Visa for US Citizens

The new E-Visa (also known as an ETA (electronic travel authority) is the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to get an Indian visa for US Citizens and is good for trips up to 60 days. The E-visa has sometimes been described as a ‘visa on arrival’ but you must still apply for the visa in advance before you travel.

Citizens from 161 countries are eligible to apply online for an E Tourist Visa to India, including citizens of the USA, Canada, UK and Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and many European Countries. At first the ETA was only valid for 30 days.

The cost for an E-Visa for India depends on your nationality. The cost for an Indian E-visa for US citizens. The application process is fully online, and you can apply a minimum of 4 days before your arrival date in India. However, E Visas are NOT extendable or convertible and you can only apply for an E-Visa twice per year.

You can enter India on an E Visa at 24 airports and 3 seaports; Cochin, Goa and Mangalore. The E-visa has three subcategories; e-Tourist Visa, e-Business Visa and e-Medical Visa. Double entry is permitted on E-Tourist Visa and E-Business Visa. Triple Entry is allowed for E-Medical visa.

How to apply for an Indian E Visa online:
You can apply for an E Visa to India on the government website at Indian E Tourist Visa. The process is fully online and your visa will be emailed to you but you need to make sure that a printed copy of your visa approval must be with you when you arrive in India. The visa will then be affixed to your passport at the airport when you arrive in India.

As the process is fully online (i.e. you are not required to send off your passport and wait for 2 weeks for the visa to be processed like you do with the longer term visas) the E-Visa makes planning a holiday to India so much quicker and easier.

However, bear in mind that applying for the E Visa can still be quite confusing as there is still a lot of paperwork to fill out and the forms ask you a lot of questions. You also need to make sure the photo you upload meets the specific requirements. Plus, the fee for the visa and for processing of the application are non-refundable, even if the visa is not granted, so if you make a mistake on the forms you could be rejected and has to apply and pay again.

Longer Term Indian Visas for US Citizens:
While most nationalities apply for 6 or 12 month Indian visa, US citizens are lucky are as we can apply for a 5 or 10-year multiple entry tourist visa for India. These two options come with multiple entries, which will be helpful if you travel frequently across Asia and plan for different visits to India. As with any visa application, there is no guarantee that the visa will be granted. Should the visa be refused, there will be no refund of the visa fees.

The passport must be valid for 6 months at the time of visa application. The Passport must have at least 2 blank Visa pages available for India Visa stamp. Amendment pages in the back of the passport are not suitable for Indian Visa.

How to Apply for the India E-Tourist Visa on Arrival | E-Visa

India is truly one of the most memorable destinations to visit when traveling the world. From Jaipur, Delhi, Agra to the holy Varanasi, India offers wonderful and magical sites for the young and old alike. If you like lavish palaces, colorful bazaars, temple carvings, Bollywood movies and off course buildings, such as the Taj Mahal, then you’re in need of the India E-Tourist Visa to make your India travel dreams a reality.

When we first left on our travels at the beginning of 2014, we knew we wanted to visit India but we weren’t sure how to go about getting the required visa for a visit while we were on the road. In the past, taking a trip to India was a bit of a process. There were embassy’s involved, loads of paperwork, long wait times and uncertain results. However today, hundreds of citizens from all over the world can now apply online for their India E-Tourist Visa instead of visiting an Indian embassy in their home country or during their travels.

We happened to be traveling in Thailand when the announcement was made that you could now apply for your visa to India online without having to visit an embassy. It was an overwhelming sigh of relief because we were originally planning to spend several weeks attempting to obtain a visa in Bangkok. With the announcement and new process, came an almost instantaneous visa from the comfort of our hotel room. Traveling to India no longer has to be a headache of paperwork, delays and long lines.

The Process:
For those planning a trip, whether it be for business or leisure, everyone requires a valid passport and a visa to take a flight to India.  Remember that you need to get your Indian E-Tourist Visa Online when planning your trip to enjoy this absolutely awe-inspiring country.

Thankfully, technology has made it much easier to get the India E-Tourist Visa. It’s now linked electronically to your passport so you can apply conveniently from the comfort of your home prior to your trip and leave the spare time to planning and packing. No need to hover over your mailbox for weeks on end, simply apply at least 72 hours before your arrival to India and print the PDF document that will arrive via email.

Your India E-Tourist Visa is valid for one entry and has the duration of 30 days. Make sure that your itinerary is planned accordingly because this is not a visa that can be renewed or extended once you are in the country.

There are essentially two types of Indian Visas for tourists:
To apply for a six-month (or longer) tourist Visa, you need to apply at an Indian mission (see links above for examples of Consulate Generals and High Commissions). You have to apply online, print the form and bring it to your local consulate. There will be many very specific rules, such as the exact dimensions of the photos you need to bring. If you don’t follow the guidelines precisely, and to the letter, they will not accept your application. Likewise, if there are any mistakes, such as a name misspelled.

To get detailed information about the e-Visa, read this page.

To apply for the new e-Visa facility, you can apply online on this page: Indian Visa Online. See below for more details.

How Can Apply for India E-Tourist Visa for Russian citizens

India and Russia enjoy a strong strategic, economic and military relationship. Tourists from Russia contribute around 7% of the total number of tourists to India. The government of India introduced E-Visas in 2015 making it easier to get India E-Tourist Visa for Russian citizens. India has seen a steady increase in the number of tourists after implementation of E-Visas. E-Visas made the entire visa process a lot easier than how it was before.

Do Russian citizens need a visa for travel to India?
Yes, all Russian citizens visiting India must possess a valid travel authorization before arriving in India. Foreign citizens arriving at Indian ports without a valid visa will not be given permission to enter the country; therefore it is mandatory to have a visa before arriving in India.

Is it possible to get Visa on arrival in India for Russian citizens?
The government of India replaced its existing visa on arrival system with ETVs in 2015 so it is not possible to get the visa on arrival. E-Visas cannot be applied offline. The online application takes a minimum of 2 days to be approved; therefore the application has to be made at least 4 days prior to your journey to India.

Choosing the right visa suiting your need is as important as having a valid visa. India provides basically two kinds of visas:-

E-Visas - These are electronic visas with shorter validity. Foreign citizens who want to visit India for short duration medical treatment, business purpose or for tourism can avail this visa.

Regular visas - These visas are also called sticker visas as the visas are stuck on to your passport. Sticker visas hold multiple entry benefits along with a validity of up to 10 years. Unlike E-Visas, sticker visas cannot be applied online. One has to fix an appointment with the concerned Indian embassy and apply in person.

Regular visas include Conference Visa, Diplomatic Visa, Employment Visa, Emergency Visa, Entry Visa, Journalist Visa, Medical Visa Missionaries Visa, and Tourist visa, Permit to re-enter within 2 months, Research Visa, Student Visa Transit Visa, Intern Visa, and Film Visa.

If you plan on applying through a visa agent, they accept photos and scanned copies in any format or size. The India visa agent with whom we do business with accepts photographs shot on your mobile phones. They will later edit the photos and scanned copies to the needed specification.

If you wish to apply for an India E-Tourist visa on your own you need to keep all the documents ready for the required specification. Even a slight variation from the said specification will result in rejection of your application. You need to be very careful while uploading the documents.
